That’s exactly how I would have approached it, too. I convinced my (relatively new at the time) girlfriend to buy a new sleeping pad, sleeping bag, and tent for an upcoming trip that we had to Hawaii. It was going to be much cheaper to do that and camp for a few nights than staying in expensive hotels. Even with the cost of some pretty good gear, we saved a ton of money on the trip.
