Like you, much of it is because I don’t spend a lot of time with meals and I extend the day of exploration into early evening. Much of it though is that I realized long ago that details could be found later, more important is having a general sense of the environment. I’ve visited very many American Indian ruins in the West, but I find in most of them the very detailed information available through guide books and placards to be mind-numbing and impossible to absorb, it’s easier to casually wander around, take lots of pictures, eavesdrop on what others think particularly interesting, and if something sparks my interest, look it up later on the Internet.
